Tail of the Dragon
(In the rain) |
Trip Notes:
Go figure--22.5 days on the road and only a spritz of rain. The day I
hit the world famous Tail of the Dragon, a very twisty road, it dumps.
This morning I finished
Blue Ridge Parkway. This was the best section--rivers nearby and a
route that dipped and snaked up to 6,000 feet.
Then it was down to the valley and up to Deals Gap where Tail of the Dragon
begins. And today the rain began.
This 11-mile section of US-129 has 318 turns, reputed to be a major
challenge. In a way it was, but with proper safety, especially speed, it was
not that difficult. The fact that I made my run
late Sunday afternoon probably reduced the risk of others on the road
who don't drive carefully. South Grade Road to Palomar Mtn is much more
difficult.
Made it to Knoxville but at 6 p.m. The
thunder and lightning
began with rain not far off. |
