Cardiff Reef

Cardiff Reef

It can get a little crowded at Cardiff Reef, the world class surf spot in Northern San Diego County.  And there can be a local attitude for the disrespectful.  But with the right approach, on a day that's not jammed with kooks, it's a great break.

Located at the outfall of one of the local lagoons, this rocky reef can handle anything from one foot to ten.  Lefts and rights stand up quickly and peel off the bottom for a sometimes elevator shaft drop.  When the state of California pumps sand in, there's a nice beach.  But winter storms can denude the place, leaving an uncomfortable cobbled trek into the water and those little stones can crack your glass when you least want it.

There are often professional surfers here and when they paddle out, just sit back and enjoy the show.
