La Jolla Shores

Barrels of

Fun

If you think your break gets a bit crowded, try visiting La Jolla Shores on a warm summer weekend.  If you can find a parking place within a 30-minute hike from the line-up, you'll find a maze of towels, blankets and umbrellas to negotiate before your toes touch the water.

But on those winter swells, early in the morning.  Be prepared!

Take a fast drop, crank a turn before you hit the bottom and then hold on for dear life.  Head-high isn't unusual during this time of year.  The huge northwest swells travel through deep ocean, across the vast La Jolla trench just of shore, and WHAM!  Be quick or wipe out.

Most of the locals are friendly, but as with any break, basic courtesy goes a long way.  Don't be afraid to ask questions.

This is also a popular spot for surf schools.  Because of its broad sand beach and gentle summer waves, schools such as Surf Divas thrive at the shores.

Take a towel, a board and lots of sunscreen.  White sand gets hot!
