Manhattan Beach Pier

Tucked in the South Bay area of Los Angeles is Manhattan Beach.  It may have started as a tiny beach resort, but today it's jam packed with locals and tourists alike.  Even Hollywood types--the famous and wannabes--can be seen strolling the boardwalk.

But the pier offers some exceptional surfing.  With its typical sand bars built up on both the north and south sides, there are some excellent waves when the swell direction and tide are right.

I first surfed here in the mid '60s and, after moving away, came back occasionally to catch the beach/pier break.

Be forewarned--it gets crowded in the summer, parking is difficult to find and the pier is both fun and dangerous to shoot.
